Avery is a Washington, DC native. Moving to North Carolina in high school and discovering speech and debate Forensics was a gateway into discovering dramatic texts and subsequently acting. After placing first in the State Championship tournament in Dramatic Interpretation his senior year, he enrolled in the prestigious North Carolina School of the Arts right out of high school.

 

Avery recently appeared as George in the Dorset Festival with Intimate Apparel and Ferdinand in The Tempest at Shakespeare Theatre Company, and also in Coriolanus and Wallenstien with STC. Avery's New York credits include; Broadway: The Tempest; Roundabout Theatre Company: McReele; NY Shakespeare Festival: Antony and Cleopatra, Troilus and Cressida; The Drama Dept.: Hope is the Thing with Feathers; Lincoln Center Lab: Maid. Regional credits include The Whipping Man at Cleveland Playhouse and The Old Globe (San Diego Critics Circle and NAACP Theatre award nominee); TheatreWorks Hartford: Race; PlayMakers Rep/Syracuse Stage: Angels in America; Actors Theatre of Louisville: Spunk, The Tempest; Contemporary American Theatre Festival: Stick/Fly; Crossroads Theatre Company: Lost Creek Township (Regional Tony Season); Cape Fear Regional Theatre: Fences. Numerous Film and Television appearances include, Forever, A Gifted Man, Ugly Betty, Oz, Law & Order, He Got Game, and more. Avery has been an instructor for the Summer Acting Intensive at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
