Alan Paul is a director of theater and opera. He is currently the Associate Artistic Director of The Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, DC (Recipient of the 2012 Regional Theater Tony Award). Alan is also the recipient of the 2014 Helen Hayes Award for Best Director of a Musical for his production of A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum.
At STC Alan has directed A Funny Thing…Forum, The Boys From Syracuse, and the “Free For All” Revival of Twelfth Night. In 2014, he served as Associate Director for Henry IV Parts 1 and 2 with Stacy Keach, directed by Michael Kahn. In the 2014-2015 Season, Alan will direct Man of La Mancha as well as a revival of The Winter’s Tale.
In 2013, Alan was the only American finalist for the European Opera Directing Prize in Vienna, Austria. In 2015 Alan will make his Washington National Opera debut directing the premiere of Penny, part of WNO’s American Opera Initiative at The Kennedy Center. Local opera credits include Photo-Op, Before Breakfast, The Filthy Habit, Bastianello, and Lucrezia at Urban Arias; Dido and Aeneas and El Amor Brujo for The In Series; and Butterfly Saigon at Strathmore Concert Hall. Alan has taught scene study at the University of Maryland’s Opera Studio and will teach acting to WNO’s Young Artists next season. A resident of Washington, DC, local theater highlights include I Am My Own Wife (Signature Theatre), The Rocky Horror Show (co-director, The Studio Theatre 2ndStage), The Matchmaker (University of Maryland), Man of La Mancha (Catholic University), Iolanthe (Victorian Lyric Opera Company), and Fire and Air (Kennedy Center, with Bowen McCauley Dance).
Over seven seasons at STC, Alan has directed many special events with artists including Sir Patrick Stewart, Annette Bening, Yo Yo Ma, Denyce Graves, Frederica von Stade, Paloma Herrera, Pat Carroll, Dianne Reeves, Rebecca Luker, the Juilliard Jazz Ensemble, Tim Daly, Terrence McNally, Lonette McKee, Marin Mazzie, Bradley Whitford, Avery Brooks, Richard Schiff, F. Murray Abraham, Patrick Page, Kelly McGillis, Richard Thomas, Robert Cuccioli, Christine Ebersole, Harry Hamlin, Jerry Stiller, and others. Alan has directed many readings and workshops at STC as well as Woolly Mammoth, Arena Stage, The Phillips Collection, The National Academy of Sciences, and Georgetown University. From 2007-2010, Alan served as Resident Assistant Director at The Shakespeare Theatre, and assisted directors Michael Kahn, Mary Zimmerman, Rebecca Taichman, Jonathan Munby, Rebecca Taichman, Gale Edwards, and David Muse on twelve productions. Alan also has extensive credits as music director and accompanist.
Alan graduated from Northwestern University in 2006.
